Music for 12 Accordions is a project built around new works by media artist and composer Georgiy Potopalskyi and composer Alla Zagaykevych. Bringing together a concert, an installation, and a public programme, it explores the qualities of sound, practices of listening, and the perception of time. 

It began with Georgiy Potopalskyi's idea to create an acoustic work following the principles of electronic music. The composition is made up of algorithmically generated blocks. Its performance unfolds in a way more typical of multichannel electronic music than of an academic concert. Yet rather than digitally simulating acoustic instruments, it reverses the direction of imitation: sound, that is produced mechanically through the bellows, valves, and reeds of twelve accordions, attempts to pass itself off as synthesised.

"XIIБ" is Georgiy's first acoustic work and the first acoustic work known to us built on this concept. We present it both as a concert and as a 12-channel installation, not opposing but embracing different modes of existence for the same sound, and how its perception shifts depending on the conditions of listening: fixed or unbounded time, your position in space, the presence of others or accompanying events.

Alla Zagaykevych's "Corpus Caeleste," in the concert program, continues this creative approach, and dedicates the work to the founder of algorithmic music in Ukraine — Leonid Hrabovsky (b. 1935) — and his follower, Danylo Pertsov (1973–2021). The title alludes both to medieval polyphonic genres and to the realm of celestial bodies. Pertsov wove the emission spectrum of the star Meissa, the head of the Orion constellation, into his works — until the pandemic terminated the composer's earthly run.

The accordions form a circle both in space around the listeners and by design. The instrument is timbrally related to the organ, whose many-voiced nature influenced the emergence of the synthesiser. Baroque polyphony and algorithmic composition are separated by several centuries, yet despite this distance, they turn out to be surprisingly close.

In works presented through the Music for 12 Accordions project, time flows non-linearly, sounds are disguised, lurking from all sides. An idea born more than seven years ago is coming to life in the midst of a period of chaos, revealing how we perceive what we hear today, how we listen (strain to hear), how we lose, fight for, and put time in order.

«Музика для 12 акордеонів» — проєкт, що базується на нових творах медіа-артиста та   композитора Георгія Потопальського та композиторки Алли Загайкевич. Концерт, інсталяція та публічна програма присвячені дослідженню якостей звуку, практикам слухання та відчуттям часу.   

Проєкт розбудовано навколо ідеї Георгія Потопальського створити акустичний твір за принципами електронного. Композиція складається з алгоритмічно генерованих блоків. Її виконання відбувається у спосіб, більш характерний для багатоканальної електронної музики, ніж для академічного концерту. Проте на відміну від імітації акустичних інструментів цифровими засобами, тут звук, що видобувається механічно — міхами, клапанами та язичками акордеонів — намагається видати себе за синтезований.

«ХІІБ» — перший акустичний твір Георгія та перший із відомих нам акустичних творів, що має таку концепцію. Ми представляємо його і як концертне виконання, і як 12-канальну інсталяцію, не протиставляючи, а приймаючи різні способи буття одного звуку та досліджуючи, як змінюється його сприйняття залежно від умов слухання: визначеного чи необмеженого часу, вашого положення в просторі, присутності інших людей чи супутніх подій.

«Corpus Caeleste» Алли Загайкевич у концертній програмі продовжує цей творчий принцип. Композиторка присвячує свій твір засновнику напрямку алгоритмічної музики в Україні — Леоніду Грабовському (1935 р.н.) та його послідовнику — Данилу Перцову (1973–2021 рр.) Назва твору апелює як до середньовічних поліфонічних жанрів, так і до простору космічних світил. Перцов вплітав у свої твори спектр випромінювання зірки Меїсса з сузір'я Оріона, аж допоки пандемія не зупинила земний рух композитора. 

Акордеони утворюють коло і в просторі навколо слухачів, і за задумом. Цей інструмент тембрально споріднений з органом, чия багатоголосна природа вплинула на появу синтезатора. Барокову поліфонію та алгоритмічну композицію розділяють кілька століть, та попри цю дистанцію вони виявляються напрочуд близькими.

В роботах проєкту «Музика для 12 акордеонів» час тече нелінійно, звуки оманливі, підкрадаються з усіх боків. Ідея, що народилась понад сім років тому, втілюється посеред періоду хаосу, виявляючи те, як ми сьогодні сприймаємо почуте, як ми слухаємо (прислухаємося), як втрачаємо, виборюємо та упорядковуємо час. 

Георгій Потопальський | Georgiy Potopalskyi

Медіаартист (Ujif_notfound), електронний музикант і композитор, співзасновник Photinus Studio, мистецького колективу та школи нових медіа. Його практика поєднує генеративну музику, аудіовізуальні перформанси та інсталяції. У фокусі уваги митця — робота з просторовим звуком і пошук художньої мови, що балансує на межі фігуративного й абстрактного, цифрового й реалістичного, де «реальне» плавно переходить у симуляцію.

Media artist (Ujif_notfound), electronic musician and composer, co-founder of Photinus Studio, an art collective and school of new media. His practice combines generative music, audiovisual performances, and installations. The artist's focus is on working with spatial sound and searching for an artistic language that balances between the figurative and the abstract, the digital and the realistic, where the "real" smoothly transitions into simulation.

Композиторка, кураторка мистецьких проєктів, перформерка. Поєднує роботу в академічних жанрах (симфонічна, камерна, електроакустична музика, опера) та сучасному медіамистецтві. З середини 90-х років активно пропагує академічну електронну музику в Україні, співпрацює з музикантами експериментальної електронної музики. Є арт-директоркою проєктів “Електроакустика”, EM-VISIA та головою Асоціації електроакустичної музики України в CIME/ICEM.

Composer, curator of art projects, performer. She combines work in academic genres (symphonic, chamber, electroacoustic music, opera) with contemporary media art. Since the mid-1990s, she has actively promoted academic electronic music in Ukraine and collaborates with experimental electronic musicians. She is the art director of the projects "Electroacoustics" and EM-VISIA, and head of the Ukrainian Association for Electroacoustic Music at CIME/ICEM.
